6 In-Office Teeth Whitening Options You Should Know

Despite the fact that there are many home remedies and teeth whitening kits you can use at home, in-office teeth whitening remains the most effective option. Your dentist may advise you to choose between several options that would be most suitable for you.

You should also know that teeth whitening has contraindications. This applies to the presence of tooth decay and some non-carious defects like inflammatory diseases in the oral cavity. Some techniques couldn’t be performed during pregnancy. In this article, we gathered six in-office teeth whitening options you should know.

1. UV teeth whitening

UV teeth whitening is considered one of the most modern techniques of teeth whitening. It involves applying a hydrogen peroxide gel to the teeth, which is then illuminated by a UV lamp. UV teeth whitening provides the cleavage and removal of the pigment from the surface of your teeth. UV teeth whitening benefits include:

  • Fast results
  • Can be used with increased teeth sensitivity
  • The effect lasts up to 2 years

The disadvantages of the procedure include its duration. It takes about 2 hours. After that, an unpleasant aftertaste can be felt in the mouth for some time.

2. Air-Flow

This is an abrasive method for whitening the tooth enamel. It removes plaque with the help of an abrasive component, air, and water. In most cases, baking soda is usually used as an abrasive. Air-Flow advantages are:

  • There are few contraindications
  • Removal of tartar
  • Cleaning in hard-to-reach areas

The disadvantages include the effectiveness of such a procedure. It is more suitable for professional hygiene since teeth whitening provides bleaching for no more than 3 tones. Moreover, if you have increased teeth sensitivity, you may experience discomfort during the procedure.

3. Chemical teeth whitening

Chemical teeth whitening implies the use of products with hydrogen peroxide. They penetrate deep into the enamel and destroy the pigment. With the help of chemical teeth whitening, teeth can be bleached by 3-10 tones. Advantages of the chemical teeth whitening method include:

  • Fast effect
  • Saving the result for more than a year and a half

However, this teeth whitening option has some disadvantages. After the procedure, the enamel may become more sensitive. Moreover, if the mucous membrane was not isolated properly during such bleaching, you can get a chemical burn.

4. Ultrasonic method

The ultrasonic teeth whitening method is considered one of the most demanded and popular options. It involves the use of gels in combination with an ultrasound. The ultrasonic method provides whitening for 2-3 tones. Advantages of ultrasonic enamel clarification are:

  • Safety
  • Suitable for hyperesthesia
  • It is painless

The downside of this option is that several procedures may be required to obtain the desired result.

5. Endo whitening

Endo whitening involves the introduction of a whitening agent into the tooth cavity. This method is suitable only for crowns without a pulp. Advantages of endo whitening include:

  • Bleaching the teeth without damaging the enamel
  • Whitening for 8-10 tones
  • Painlessness procedure

The most common disadvantages are:

  • Several procedures are required
  • The tooth tissues may  become more fragile after the whitening

6. Laser teeth whitening

Laser teeth whitening is considered the most effective bleaching option since it allows teeth to whiten teeth up to 12 tones. This is the maximum result of modern dentistry. During the procedure, the dentist will apply a spectacle gel to your teeth and then illuminate it with a laser. The advantages of the laser teeth whitening procedure:

  • Fast results
  • Bactericidal effect
  • Lightening 6-12 tones
  • Saving the result for up to 2 years

The disadvantage is that within 24 hours after the procedure, the teeth may react to hot and cold temperatures.
