Flossing details and more…

You must have heard from your dentist many a times about flossing your teeth regularly…ever wondered why?? Well let’s discuss about what flossing is…how important it is…and what are the types of flosses available in the market.

What is flossing??? Why is flossing important???

  • Flossing is done to remove all the food particles, bacteria and plaque that are stuck in between your teeth.
  • Whether you feel it or not food gets stuck between your teeth and if neglected for a long period, plaque and tartar will build up, thus resulting in gum diseases and cavities.
  • No matter how well you brush there are always certain areas that can’t be reached by a toothbrush alone and thus dental floss should be used to clean up those areas.
  • However by lack of flossing and bacteria build up its not just the teeth and gums that are affected but these bacteria have been a contributing factors to heart diseases, diabetes and even respiratory problems.

How to floss???

Start with about 18 inches of floss, wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with.

Hold the floss tautly between your thumbs and index fingers

Slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth.

Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gum line. Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise delicate gum tissue.

  • Correct brushing and flossing habits go a long way toward protection from gum disease. Antibacterial toothpaste and mouth rinse are effective in destroying bacteria and decrease the quantity of plaque in your mouth. As recommended by several dentists, among the many preventive measures, regular dental visits and proper brushing and flossing routine are your best guard against cavities.
