Sedation for dental procedures is a growing and dynamic area of practice. This is a comprehensive 8 hour continuing education presentation intended to review and provide information to assist practitioners in providing safe sedation in the out patient setting. This program meets requirements for most state dental board sedation permit renewals. Program includes hands on airway management component utilizing multiple devices on a patient simulator.
Upon completion of course, the dentist / oral surgeon should be able to: |

● Describe the basic components of effective patient monitoring and discuss the function of each. ● List and discuss the advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications of enteral and/or combination inhalation-enteral and parenteral sedation. ● Discuss the prevention, recognition and management of sedation related complications. ● Discuss the abuse potential, occupational hazards and other effects of sedatives. ● Discuss the pharmacology of the drugs selected for sedation administration and discuss the precautions, contraindications and adverse reactions associated with sedative agents. ● Describe a protocol for management of emergencies in the dental / oral surgery office and list and discuss the emergency drugs and equipment required for management of life-threatening situations. ● Discuss patient evaluation and selection through review of medical history taking, physical diagnosis and psychological profiling. ● Discuss definitions and descriptions of physiological and psychological aspects of anxiety and pain. ● Discuss and review pediatric and adult respiratory and circulatory physiology and related anatomy. ● Describe the maintenance of proper records with accurate chart entries recording medical history, physical examination, informed consent, time-oriented anesthesia record, including the names of all drugs administered, doses, and monitored physiological parameters. |
