Sedation/General Anesthesia Monitoring & I.V. Certification
for Licensed Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists.
 
This 3 day program is for assistants and allied staff employed by dental professionals involved in general anesthesia and sedation.
Included is a 2 day didactic course and a 1 day of clinical hands on skills workshop. Anesthesia | Sedation Assistant Skills Workshop
includes clinical training in airway management (utilizing multiple airway devices); intubation; venipuncture; defibrillation;  preparation of emergency drugs and medical emergency assistance.
This program has been reviewed and approved by The Minnesota Dental Board for  Licensed Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists to receive certification.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of program participants should  have demonstrable knowledge of:

  • Basic Sciences: anatomy, physiology, pharmacology 
  • Systemic diseases and evaluation/preparation of patients for sedation
  • Basic fluid, electrolyte balance and therapy – types of I.V. fluids, line, and catheters
  • Sterile Technique and Prevention of Infection
  • Anatomy and Physiology related to venipuncture sites
  • Equipment for initiation, maintenance of I.V. therapy
  • Anesthesia drugs and techniques
  • Anesthesia equipment and monitoring devices, monitoring techniques and documentation
  • Office anesthesia emergencies including respiratory depression, respiratory arrest, airway obstruction, bronchospasm, laryngospasm, hypotension, and bradycardia
  • Use of resuscitation equipment and medications including reversal agents, automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), bag-valve-mask devices (BVM or AMBU), laryngeal mask airways (LMAs), and endotracheal intubation
  • Practical intravenous laboratory: Student participation for insertion of intravenous catheters*

*Practical IV laboratory will be both simulation and live human IV insertions.
