A sensor barrier shield is a necessary item to use when taking digital dental x-rays. The shield prevents the sensor from coming into direct contact with the patients’ mouths, thus preventing water damage to the sensor as well as helping to prevent the spread of germs.

Unfortunately, if the barrier shield is not properly removed form the sensor, it is possible to cause unnecessary strain on the sensor cable, shortening the life of the sensor significantly. Take a look at the two images below for more detail:

The photo above is an example of what not to do. Attempting to pull the shield while holding onto the sensor cable causes strain on the cable. Over time, this can cause the cable to break down and may eventually make the sensor pre-trigger or fail altogether.

This photo, however, demonstrates the proper way to remove the shield. Hold the sensor head with both hands and push the sensor head out of the shield in much the same was as you would squeeze toothpaste out of the tube.
