All Ceramic Dental Crowns

Dеntаl сrоwnѕ represent a tуре оf dеnturе whiсh rерlасе the natural crown of teeth. Thе nаturаl сrоwn оf a tooth is thе part of a tooth аbоvе the tooth rооt and thе gum (оr gingivаl margin).A dеntаl сrоwn is needed when a tооth is so bаdlу damaged bу caries or tооth decay, that a dеntаl filling оr dеntаl inlау dоеѕn’t оffеr аn еffесtivе ѕоlutiоn аnуmоrе. Also dеntаl сrоwnѕ аrе applied if a tооth wаѕ lost аnd a dеntаl implant hаѕ already bееn inserted in its рlасе.

Whаt mаtеriаlѕ аrе uѕеd fоr dental сrоwnѕ?

Thеrе are five diffеrеnt tуреѕ оf dеntаl сrоwnѕ. Thеѕе differ in ѕеvеrаl аѕресtѕ.

1.Metal crowns: ѕinсе thеу аrеn’t tооth coloured as thеу соnѕiѕt оf mеtаl аrе mоrе likеlу tо bе аррliеd in less viѕiblе аrеаѕ.

2.Pоrсеlаin fuѕеd tо mеtаl сrоwnѕ (PFM) соnѕiѕt оf mеtаl in thе inside аnd of ѕуnthеtiс mаtеriаlѕ оr сеrаmiс lауеrѕ on thе оutѕidе.

3.An оthеr tуре оf dеntаl crowns аrе the  all-ceramic dental crown which аrе entirely made of сеrаmiс. All-сеrаmiс сrоwnѕ аrе vеrу аеѕthеtiс, which makes them thе most еxреnѕivе type оf dеntаl crowns. All-сеrаmiс crowns are аррliеd tо the viѕiblе tееth аrеаѕ in оrdеr tо fine-tune thе aesthetic оf the teeth, since аll-сеrаmiс crowns аrе the mоѕt ѕimilаr to nаturаl crowns.

4.Thе ѕо-саllеd galvanic gоld dеntаl crowns are similar tо аll сеrаmiс dеntаl сrоwnѕ in several аѕресtѕ, likе  quality аnd aesthetic, but аrе stabilised оn a base frаmе of uрѕсаlе gоld аllоуѕ.

5.A раrtiаl dеntаl сrоwn iѕ inѕеrtеd intо the inside оf thе tооth, if thе visible part of the tooth iѕn’t ѕо bаdlу dаmаgеd. Partial crowns are аррliеd in order to рrеvеnt оr аvоid the uѕе оf a соmрlеtе сrоwn.

Dеntаl сrоwn соѕt:

The costs оf a dеntаl crown dереnd оn ѕеvеrаl fасtоrѕ, ѕuсh аѕ the manufacture, mаtеriаlѕ, еffоrt and thе tуре of thе dеntаl crown. Cеrаmiс сrоwnѕ аrе thе mоѕt еxреnѕivе, thе costs are аррrоximаtеlу аt 1260 $ in thе US, аnd in Hungary аt 400 $.

Mаintаin dental сrоwnѕ:

Mоdеrn dеntаl crowns аrе еаѕу tо сlеаn. Still, potential lеftоvеrѕ аnd bасtеriа can ассumulаtе on the dеnturе lеаding tо bаd breath, inflаmmаtiоn of thе gum аnd diѕсоlоrаtiоn оf the dental сrоwn. Thеrеfоrе it iѕ important tо knоw that whеn it comes to dеntаl сrоwnѕ or to dentures generally, the рrореr cleansing muѕt be dоnе with thе same tооlѕ оnе uѕеѕ fоr natural teeth: toothbrushes, dеntаl flоѕѕ аnd oral dоuсhе. Alѕо a professional сlеаning ѕhоuld bе dоnе аt thе dеntiѕt’ѕ every ѕix mоnthѕ, аѕ аdviѕеd.

To Flouride or Not to Flouride?

One of the most controversial topics in dentistry: Fluoride

Aren't you wondering why this naturally occurring mineral is so important to your oral health???

We at Off Island Dental want you to know!!!

Plenty of people out there avoid the naturally occurring mineral. We urge you to consider the importance of  your tooth enamel when making the decision to add a little extra at your next teeth cleaning.

Occurring naturally in foods and water, fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Every day, minerals are added (re-mineralization) and lost (demineralization) from a tooth’s enamel layer. In order to promote healthy teeth, it's important to have fluoride as a component in our daily diet.

Re-mineralization occurs when minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are re-deposited to the enamel layer from the foods & water you consume. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks caused from bad bacteria and sugar. In addition, fluoride disrupts acid production in already erupted primary and permanent teeth.

When More Fluoride Is Recommended

Frequent Cavities: When cavities occur frequently, one or more a year, fluoride treatments are recommended.

Dry Mouth: The lack of saliva makes it harder for food particles to be washed away and acids to be neutralized. Some medications such as anti-anxiety, high blood pressure, and allergy medications can cause dry mouth.

Gum Disease: Gum disease is also called Periodontitis. When disease is present, it can expose more of your tooth and root to bacteria, causing a greater chance of tooth decay.

Dental Restorations: Dental bridges, braces, and dental crown treatments can put teeth at risk for decay. The point where the tooth crown meets the underlying tooth structure on a dental crown is more likely to harbor bacteria and cause cavities. For orthodontic treatments, the area around the brackets are more likely to develop cavities.

How Can I Get More Fluoride???
Fluoride is found in foods and water. In addition, it can be applied directly to teeth using toothpastes and mouth rinses. For a stronger strength of fluoride, a doctor’s prescription will be needed.

Fluoride Rich Foods

Cucumbers 491mcg

Grape Juice 460mcg

Spinach 329mcg

Apple Juice 170mcg

*Fluoride is safe and highly effective when used as directed but can hazardous at high levels. An individual’s weight is a factor when determining the toxic dosage level. This is why it is especially important for children to be supervised when using fluoride-containing products. Also, excessive fluoride can cause tooth defects. These defects can range from barely noticeable to cosmetically challenged discoloration. Our dentist may be able to lighten or remove these stains professionally.

"WISDOM TOOTH"

“With age comes wisdom. Specifically, wisdom tooth”

Your mouth goes through many changes in your lifetime. By the age of 18, the average adult has 32 teeth, 16 teeth on the top and 16 teeth on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function. The teeth in the front of the mouth (incisors, canine and bicuspid teeth) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces. The back teeth (molar teeth) are used to grind food up into a consistency suitable for swallowing.

The average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth. It can be painful when 32 teeth try to fit in a mouth that holds only 28 teeth.

These 4 other teeth are your third molars also known as “wisdom teeth”

      1. Why are they called wisdom teeth?

Late in the 1600’s, the idea of a common dentistry was advancing and dentists started calling them teeth of wisdom       to the public, mainly because this set of molars didn’t grow in until we are about 17 – 24 years old. The rest of our      teeth both primary and permanent form prenatally as buds. Wisdom teeth are actually the only teeth that don’t         develop until after birth.

      2. What does impacted mean?

When a wisdom tooth is said to be impacted, that means it is blocked from fully erupting through the gums. It’s very       common- 85% of wisdom teeth being impacted. The wisdom teeth are not the only type of teeth that may become       impacted but it occurs less frequently with other types of teeth.

The level of impaction varies from patient to patient. Some patients have soft tissue impaction in which the tooth has made it through the bone but is still under the gum. Another type of impaction is when part of the tooth has erupted but part of it still stuck in the jawbone. This is known as partial bony impaction. Finally if the tooth has not erupted out of the jaw at all it is known as a complete or total bony impaction.

3.Why are impacted wisdom teeth a problem?

Impacted wisdom teeth become a problem when they can pain or affect other teeth. When the tooth cannot erupt upwards as they are supposed to, they can push on nearby teeth. This puts pressure on those teeth and causes pain. This pressure can make the other teeth to shift to make room for the wisdom teeth that are trying to break through. This can impact your smile’s symmetry and make your teeth crooked.

Impacted wisdom teeth are also harder to clean than teeth that are fully erupted, which like in the rest of your teeth, leads to decay. The wisdom teeth are so hard to keep clean because they are in a far back and often hard to reach position in the mouth. Decay is extremely difficult to treat in the wisdom teeth, and most dentists don’t recommend it. If decay is not treated the patient runs the risk of developing infections. Infections of the wisdom teeth are serious and can be hard to treat.

    4. How are wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth have to be surgically extracted and may involve trimming of the bone. When carefully executed by skilled and experienced doctors it is a very safe and predictable procedure. Once the patient is comfortable, regular local anesthesia is used and the teeth are carefully and delicately removed. The opening left after the extraction is sealed with stitches to avoid any bleeding and ensure healing.

    5. What I should expect after the procedure?

Since the local anesthetic lasts for a few hours after the procedure, very little discomfort is present. By taking the prescribed analgesics at the right time, most patients are able to control the discomfort associated with the procedure very well. Most bleeding is controlled during the intervention and at the end of the procedure cotton gauze's are applied to put pressure on the extraction sites. A minimal oozing is usually present for the first few hours after the surgery and the use of carefully placed cotton gauze's should be sufficient to make it stop. Recovery time as being the end of the symptom of the procedure is approximately 7-10 days. The discomfort tends to wear off after the third day and the swelling usually ends by around the 7th day. Of course the more you ice the wound in the first 48 hours the faster the swelling disappears! For most patients, 3-7 days of analgesic and 5-7 days of antibiotics are sufficient. It is important to remember that even if you are not experiencing any symptoms you must take your medications.

" ROOT CANAL TREATMENT"

“Preserve your natural teeth…...Root canals are really not as          terrifying as you may have heard…..”

If you were recently informed that you need a root canal, chances are the minute you left your dental office, you immediately began scouring the internet for information on this well known – but highly misunderstood – dental service. The internet can be a great place to gather helpful information, but it is also plagued by unreliable sources and dangerously inaccurate information.

The following are the common myths and misinformation about root canals and tooth pain that are prevalent online. While finding out you are in need of a root canal can be frightening, the more you know about this tooth saving procedure and what it can do for your tooth ache and oral health, the calmer and more confident you will feel when you return to the dentist’s chair.

       - You only need a root canal if you are experiencing tooth pain.

       -    Root canal treatment is painful.

       -    Root canals cause illness.

       -   The benefits of root canal therapy are temporary.

       -  Tooth extraction (pulling the tooth)  is a good alternative to root canals.

       1. What is a Root Canal?

The central chamber of a tooth contains the living vital tissues comprising the pulp including its nerves and blood vessels. The interior of the tooth’s roots containing the pulp make up its root canals.

     2. How do I know if a tooth has a root canal infection?

Symptoms of root canal infection may include sharp, intense pain when you bite down a dull ache or pressure or tenderness and swelling in gums near an infected tooth. There may be a lingering pain after eating cold or hot foods. However, sometimes an infected tooth may stop hurting and you no longer feel pain. This doesn’t mean the infection has gone, only that the nerve may have died. Make an appointment if you suspect that you have any or some of these symptoms.

    3. Why would a tooth need Root Canal Treatment?

If the tissues in the root canals become infected or inflamed because of deep cavity or trauma to a tooth, root canal treatment is needed to treat the infection and save the tooth. If left untreated, root canal infection can spread into the bone immediately around the root.

    4. I’m worried about X -rays, should I be?

No. While X -rays will be necessary during your root canal treatment, we use an advanced non- computerized system called digital radiography that produces radiation levels up to 90% lower than those of already low dose conventional dental X- ray machinery.

    5. What takes place in a Root Canal Procedure?

After a local anesthetic is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area, a small opening is made in the biting surface of the tooth. Dead and or dying tissue is removed from the pulp chamber and the root canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed to prevent future infection.

    6. What can I expect afterwards?

Your tooth may feel tender or sensitive for a few days. You can take over- the- counter non - steroidal anti- inflammatory medication, Aspirin or Ibuprofen, for example, to relieve pain or discomfort. Contact us if you have pain that lasts more than a few days. A crown is usually needed to protect the tooth following root canal treatment.Further, arrangements need to be made for the stage of the procedure. Don’t chew on the affected tooth until symptoms subside and the tooth has been restored as necessary.

   7. Would extraction be a better alternative?

Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very best option. Nothing can completely replace your natural tooth. An artificial tooth can sometimes cause you to avoid certain foods, keeping your own teeth is important so that you can continue to enjoy the wide variety of foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrient balance in your diet. If your dentist recommend extraction, ask whether root canal treatment is an option.

Root canal treatment along with appropriate restoration is a cost effective way to treat teeth with a damage pulp and is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of a bridge or an implant. Root canal treatment also has a very high success rate. Many root canal treated teeth last a lifetime. Placement of a bridge or an implant will require significantly more time in treatment and may result in further procedures to adjacent teeth and supporting tissues.

In 2015, more than one million North Americans had braces, with females comprising 70 percent and a majority were aged 12 to 15 years old. Braces are used to correct orthodontic problems like buck teeth, crossbite, underbite, open bite, misplaced midline, spacing, crowding, and jaw joint disorders.

Braces feature brackets which usually run along a wire. The brackets and wires are then thoroughly pressed against the teeth to support minimal movements and correctly straighten and align the teeth.

However, this orthodontic treatment is heavy in the pocket with its price ranging from $5,000 to $6,000. The high cost of orthodontic treatment has led some individuals, particularly teens, into improvising their braces using readily-available materials like paper clips, earring metal stopper, rubber band, among others. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), people aged 8 to over 60 are attempting to straighten their teeth.

A quick search on video-sharing site Youtube of “DIY braces” showed about 533,000 results. A video of a kid teaching her audience “how to make fake braces,” adding that they look so real and she is not kidding has garnered almost 2.5 million views.

But, this improvision may be costing these teens more money and danger than they have signed up. Orthodontists have raised warning on the possible harm of straightening your teeth on your own that could lead to gum irritation, teeth misalignment, and tooth loss. According to Dr. Jeffrey Kong of El Dorado Hills in his interview with Chicago Tribune, while the beautifying projects (DIY braces) might be cheap at first, they carry a risk that could ultimately cost thousand of dollars.
BC Society of Orthodontists President Todd Moore echoed Dr. Kong’s warning on the cost of DIY treatment in the future. He added that DIY braces could cause irreparable damage to teeth. “A patient wouldn’t attempt to set a broken bone on their own, so they shouldn’t try to fix structural issues either,” he added.

Moving the teeth without the proper training, materials, and examination of the teeth and gums increases the risk of infection and damage to teeth and gums that include permanent loss of teeth.

In a Youtube video which has over 410,000 views as of press time, 24-year-old singer-songwriter Brandon Andre detailed how he closed his teeth gap using elastic hair band worth $5 and placed them on his teeth daily for about six weeks. Andre admitted on experiencing soreness and bleeding. Although he considered himself lucky in his attempt to address his orthodontic problem on his own, Andre said that it might not work for everybody. “Luckily for me, I was successful and had no problems, and it changed how I felt about my image,” he said.

What is quite alarming is that Andre is not the first and only person to use elastic hair bands as “gap band.” In 2012, Youtube user Shalom DeSota created a tutorial on how to bridge the gaps between teeth using an elastic hair band. According to her, the hair band must be worn for at least a few weeks or for as long as the method takes to work. The video has over 1.2 million views.

Although elastic bands are used in dentistry to help improve the fit of the upper and lower teeth and jaws while wearing braces and also in teeth extraction, it is not advisable to use the hair bands in closing teeth gaps. “When you move a tooth, the color of the tooth might change because you are damaging the blood supply,” Dr. Juan Rendon of Jefferson Dental Clinics told Refinery29.

Aside from the color of the tooth, the “gap band” method can cause changes in the shape of the gums and severe gum inflammation and infection due to the pressure that cut off blood supply. “Gap band” can lead to bone loss, root damage and tooth loss because the gums may absorb the rubber band.

Teeth are important! No wonder most of us take a really good care of them.  Brushing, flossing, scraping our tongue, using mouth wash... we all do that. Our mouth might very well be the part of our body we take the most care of and yet tooth decay and gum disease are still some of the most prevalent diseases in the world. How come? The answer might hide in the fridge.

Surprising or not, the reason behind frequent visits to the dentist might be your diet. Even if you have a perfect oral hygiene routine it might be hard to keep your teeth healthy, if you don’t watch what you eat. Often we see food as being the villain when it comes to oral health. It is sugars and acids from food and drinks that do most of the damage to our teeth. However there are many types of food that not only don’t harm your teeth as much but can even give a big boost to your oral health.

Some of the healthy foods to improve your diet and the health of your mouth are:-

 1. Cheese and dairy products:-

Milk and other milk products like cheese contain calcium and proteins, nutrients that strengthen the tooth enamel. Dairy products lower the acid level in your mouth, thereby lowering the risk of tooth decay. They increase the saliva production which washes off the bacteria in the mouth. Hard cheeses are the best options. Yogurt is high in calcium and protein too. Additionally the probiotics or beneficial bacteria also benefit your gums and help prevent cavities and fights bad breath. If you decide to add more yogurt to your diet choose a plain variety with no added sugars.

 2. Leafy greens:-

Leafy greens typically find their way onto any healthy foods list. They are full of vitamins and minerals while being low in calories. Leafy greens such as spinach, broccoli, kale etc. also promote oral health that your teeth and gums love. They are high in calcium which builds your tooth’s enamel. They contain folic acid and vitamin B that has numerous health benefits for example - treating gum disease in pregnant women. If you have trouble getting leafy greens into your diet add a handful of baby spinach to your next salad or throw same kale on a pizza. You can also try adding some greens to a smoothie.

 3. Fruits :-

Fruits like apples, oranges and strawberries are great for your teeth. Apples might be sweet but they are also high in fibre and water. It produces saliva in your mouth which rinses away bacteria and food particles. The fibrous texture of the fruit also stimulates the gums. Eating an apple isn’t the same as brushing your teeth with a tooth paste that contains fluoride but it can take over until you have a chance to brush. Pack either a whole apple or apple slices in your lunch to give your mouth a good scrubbing at the end of a meal. Oranges are least acidic of all citrus fruits and have all the health benefits that you can expect from fruits. If you want perfect teeth, you better love strawberries! They are packed with vitamin C, antioxidants and also maleic acid which could naturally whiten your teeth.

 4. Crunchy vegetables :-

Carrots are crunchy and full of fibre, tasty and so full of the most important minerals and vitamins to your mouth, that they deserve a special mention. No wonder bugs bunny has perfect teeth...Eating a handful of raw carrots at the end of the meal increases saliva production in your mouth which reduces the risk of cavities. Along with being high in fibre, carrots are a great source of vitamin A. Top a salad with a few slices of raw carrots or enjoy some baby carrots on their own. Celery in many ways the perfect snack for good oral health and is the closest we have to natures floss. It might have a bad reputation for being bland, watery and full of those pesky strings, but it acts a bit like a tooth brush, scraping food particles and bacteria away from your teeth. It is also a good source of vitamin A and C, two antioxidants that give the health of your gums a boost. Make celery even tastier by topping it with cream cheese.

 5. Nuts:-

Nuts are nature’s way of showing us that “Good things come in small packages”. These bite size nutritional powerhouses are packed with healthy fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.  Especially beneficial are Almonds, Brazil nuts and Cashews which help to fight bacteria that lead to tooth decay. Raisins are a source of phytochemicals which may kill bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. They are packed with tons of important elements like calcium and phosphorous. Enjoy a quarter cup of almonds with your lunch. You can also add a handful to a salad or to a stir fry dinner.

As a parent, you’re concerned with your child’s development. You pay attention to things such as whether he or she is walking and talking on schedule. Your child’s development in those areas should be high priorities for you, but no less important than those is the development of your child’s teeth. It is highly recommended that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7, so their teeth can be assessed for any potential issues in terms of their development. Although many children will need some kind of orthodontic treatment in their lives to ensure their permanent teeth come in straight and are healthy, prevention remains the best cure for most dental issues.

Key ways an orthodontist can help with TMJ

When most people think of what an orthodontist can do for them, their first thought is getting a perfect smile, with perfectly aligned teeth. However, a dental professional can do more for you then just provide you with a solution for crooked teeth.

A lot of people see this type of medical professional for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. Some of the symptoms include jaw pain, which then leads to headaches near the temple and ear discomfort. Sometimes these symptoms can also lead to upper back pain, particularly in the areas where we are prone to the most tension, such as the neck and shoulders.

TMJ disorders happen when the joints connecting your jaw line to your skull are misaligned. Here are key ways an orthodontist can help with TMJ and reduce your discomfort.

Provide you with information about TMJ pain

The most common reason for this is 2-fold; disc misplacement or a muscular reason. When it comes to a muscular cause for TMJ discomfort this is normally triggered by stress. When we are stressed we have the tendency to grind our teeth or clench our jaw, placing stress on the muscle and our teeth. This type of TMJ cause can then lead to headaches and difficulty chewing. Sometimes chewing triggers TMJ pain and makes it worse. Also, an incorrect bite placement can also bring on TMJ pain due to its ability to misalign the jaw.

People with this type of cause can also find that the pain worsens at night. This is because it is more difficult for your muscles to relax. Also, at night, sometimes more focus is placed on the discomfort making it even more difficult to relax your joints. When the cause is more related to a disc displacement, the main cause for this is typically injury or accident related. However, it could also be arthritis related.

Recognise symptoms and give you a professional diagnosis

The first sign of TMJ disorder is the placement of pain and the inability to sleep. Most of the time, patients who come to see a dentist for this type of discomfort are very much fed up with its interference and in their day-to-day lives and are looking for a real solution.

What is great about getting a professional diagnosis is that you can pin point the exact problem and therefore take the right treatment. For some people, they may already know they have TMJ disorder, however, they may think its stress related when really they have a disc misplacement.

Key ways your dental professional will diagnose your disorder is via an x-ray, physical examination, discussing your symptoms and your overall medical history. When they put all the pieces of the puzzle together from your answers, only then will you have a better idea of what is causing your pain and what the next steps are.

Provide you with the right treatment

Normally the first point of treatment for individuals that are experiencing ongoing pain due to their TMJ is to relieve this pain. Using a mouth guard typically does this. This helps take the pressure off the joint and allow it to rest and minimise the tension.

After this, a more specific treatment will be given depending on the reasons behind your disorder. These treatments can include being prescribed braces, another type of dental device, or for some, surgery may be required.

Having tooth alignment treatment is another way that pain can be relived. Headaches are one of the key issues when it comes to TMJ pain, so having alignment treatment often reduces these symptoms. This type of treatment allows for the jaw to be readjusted so it can function normally and sit on the joint better.

Overall, if you are experiencing TMJ pain symptoms or you suspect that you may have TMJ disorder, it’s best to get in contact with your orthodontist. They can help alleviate your pain sooner rather than later by providing you with key information about the disorder, recognise your symptoms and give you a professional diagnosis, and then offer you a treatment plan that will be specific to your needs. Don’t spend any more time self diagnosing or looking for DIY methods to treat your discomfort. Having professional advice from the beginning will help reduce your pain and find a real solution.

Is Dental Amalgam Safe?

Are Amalgam Dental Fillings Safe?

I am a dentist in Mansfield and I get this question a lot. Amalgam is an alloy of mercury with any other metal. Dental Amalgam is a combination of a silver alloy powders with liquid mercury. Silver-Mercury Amalgam is an old tooth cavity filling material. In the past 200 years, dental Amalgam has been the principal and the most popular restoration material among dentists. It is low cost, easy to form or manipulate, long lasting and it has a good resistance to abrasion.

Due to its durability and strength, Amalgam has been the best choice of filling material for decades. It has had a proven track of record and it has been an effective filling material successfully used billions of times in human teeth.

Amalgam has been particularly useful in restoring large cavities at the back of the mouth where biting forces are strong. Before mixing, Amalgam is in liquid form. When Amalgam is mixed, it hardens, expands and fills the cavity space inside the tooth. In addition to its long-lasting properties. Amalgam also hardens soon enough. This property, makes Amalgam a good choice of tooth restoration material for treatments with limited available time. Examples are:

  • Placement into areas where it is hard to keep dry (for example below the gum line)
  • Children who have difficult time staying still in the dental chair

Waste dental amalgam is a hazardous waste material. Stored Amalgam is also classified as a hazardous material. It should be transported in containers that are not breakable. When people read these warnings about Amalgam disposal, storage and transport, they wonder whether it is safe inside their teeth? How Amalgam can be safe when it contains mercury inside? Can small amounts of mercury released as a result of chewing be toxic and affect health?

We have all been warned enough about the health risks of mercury build-up in fish. How should we trust the mercury in our teeth? Well, because there are different types of Mercury. The mercury found in fish is Methyl Mercury. This type of mercury (Methyl Mercury) is formed by the action of microbes that live in the rivers, lakes and the ocean. The Mercury used in dental Amalgam is different from the poisonous Methyl Mercury found in fish. According to scientist, Mercury in the form of Amalgam alloy is a stable material. Many health organisations have endorsed the safety of Amalgam and based on scientific studies believe that dental amalgam poses no risk to the patient health. There is no scientific evidence that dental amalgam causes illness in our bodies.

Debates on the Safety of Dental Amalgam

Nevertheless, the safety of dental Amalgam has been a point of debate for a long time. It is still controversial and contentious. Some dentists recommend their patients to change their amalgam fillings with composite fillings (white fillings). Frequent exposure of dental clinic staff to mercury vapour has been recognized as an occupational hazard (possibly when used carelessly). There has been reports that MS patients have benefited from amalgam removal.

Over the past few decades, there has been an increased number of claims against use of dental Amalgam.  I work near the suburb of Mansfield in Queensland and I have noticed that use of dental Amalgam between Mansfield Dentists is in obvious decline. An indication of an undeniable rising concern among both dentists and patients. Since 2015 I haven’t even purchased Amalgam in my clinic. Dental Amalgam is no longer widely used. Although some health organisations like ADA are still insisting that Amalgam is safe and Amalgam-Toxicity is a scam.

Risk of toxicity is not the only reason people prefer white fillings over silver fillings. My own sister never accepted use of Amalgam for her fillings. For aesthetic reasons, she wanted and insisted on using a white filling material, the same colour as her teeth not a dark silver colour. She wanted white filling and she wanted “a pretty white filling”.

Notable disadvantages of Amalgam include:

  • Different from the tooth colour and aesthetically undesirable in the front teeth
  • Conducts temperatures faster than natural tooth

The ignition of concerns about a possible toxicity of Amalgam drives some patients to request their dentists to change their Amalgam fillings with other filling materials. Patients strongly prefer the more aesthetic white fillings over Amalgam. This demand has changed the tooth preparation and filling procedures.

Modern Dental Fillings

These days modern filling materials are available in all dental clinics. Composite resin fillings also called white fillings have replaced the old and dark silver fillings. A broken front tooth when restored correctly is hard to distinguish from other neighbouring teeth. Many patients are quite happy about the new technology. Unlike the early generations of composite fillings, the new filling materials have tooth-like qualities. They are not permanent fillings but they are natural looking and their durability is also close to a natural tooth.

Bottom line is that the best dental filling material for your teeth is no filling at all. Maintain a good oral hygiene and regularly visit your dentist to prevent cavities as much as you can. Even with the best filling material technology available today, nothing replaces a natural tooth. Take good care of them.

  • Don’t be a dentist avoider
  • Maintain a balanced diet
  • Brush and floss daily

Teeth Whitening

“Add white to your wardrobe with our teeth whitening”

May be you have always wanted a beautiful smile or your teeth have yellowed over time or you are not happy with the staining that results from drinking coffee, tea or cola. Whatever your reason for wanting whiter teeth, you are not alone. Just like we all have different hair and skin colour, people also have different tooth colour. Some teeth are more yellow than others, while others yellow with aging. Your natural tooth colour can also be affected by many factors. Brushing and flossing are everyday ways to keep your teeth bright, white and healthy.

1. Why did my teeth change colour?

Over time, your teeth can go from white to not so bright for a number of reasons:-

-          Loss of enamel with age

-          Certain food and drinks like cola, coffee, tea, red wine

-          Dental plaque / calculus / tartar

-          Tobacco / smoking / betel chewing

-          Tooth decay

-          Trauma / injury to tooth

2.  What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures. A non invasive method of lightening dark or discoloured teeth.

 3. How does teeth whitening work?

Whitening is actually a pretty simple process. Whitening products contain one of the two bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces which makes the colour less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

 4. What are my whitening options?

Talk to your dentist to figure if you are a candidate. There are certain ways to put the shine back in your smile:-

-          Whitening strips

-          Whitening gels

-          Whitening tooth pastes

-          Whitening pens

But the most effective, sure and safe way is the professional Tooth Whitening treatment by your Cosmetic Dentist.

In – office bleaching:-

The procedure usually requires only one office visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleaching gel is then applied to the teeth. A special light or laser might be used to enhance the action of the whitening agent. Not all offices offer this type of system so speak with your dentist and see if this is an option. The session lasts 10 to 15 minutes. Two or three of these sessions may be required varying from case to case.

5.  Does whitening work on all teeth?

No, this is why it’s important to talk to your dentist before deciding to whiten your teeth, as whitening may not correct all types of stains. For example, yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well and teeth with grey tones may not bleach at all. Whitening will only work on natural enamel and will not have any effect on caps (crowns), veneers or fillings. It also won’t be effective if your tooth discolouration is internal, this is the result of the staining associated with medications or trauma.

6. Is tooth whitening safe?

Yes ! It is totally safe and effective. There are some myths regarding tooth whitening which need to be corrected :-

-          It can cause damage to enamel but the fact is enamel is the hardest tissue. It does not cause any damage to it.

-          It can cause tooth sensitivity but the fact is it is a safe procedure and does not cause any tooth sensitivity.

-          You can whiten your teeth with baking soda but the fact is this simply doesn’t work.

Perfect age for teeth whitening

Normally, all permanent teeth erupt around the age of 12. Hence, teeth whitening on children are not advised for several health reasons. Moreover, bleaching of baby teeth should be performed exclusively under the supervision of an expert cosmetic dentist and secure observation of child’s parent. In extreme cases, if laser tooth whitening is performed on children it can cause increased teeth sensitivity following the procedure at least for the first 24 hours.  Most of the dentists recommend 18 years of age is the most basic age to opt for professional teeth whitening.

Despite the common misconception that your oral health and overall health are for the most part unrelated, our body components are interconnected and depend on one another. Medical research has shown that as many as 90 percent of systemic diseases produce symptoms that affect the mouth – meaning diseases involving your mouth are not just confined there, and diseases that affect other parts of the body also can impact your oral health. While you might not go to the doctor for a cavity or the dentist for the flu, your mouth and the rest of your body are more connected than you might think.

Your mouth serves as a primary gateway into the body and is part of the first line of defense against disease. Maintaining a routine that includes brushing and flossing does more than clean and protect your teeth and gums; it also fights harmful bacteria that can affect other parts of the body. For example, bacteria found in dental plaque has been linked to respiratory disease. Gingival grafting has been a common periodontal  practice in dentistry   since the early to mid to 1970’s in the USA.  The method present method used today was foremost propagated by Dr Preston Miller, a pioneering periodontist  in Tennessee.

The gingival  grafts that Dr Miller used and is still using have been those of a sub-epithelial connective tissue graft. This is where a U- shaped incision is made in the patient’s pallette, the epithelial layer is then removed and the underlying connective tissue is excised for the purpose of the gingival graft

This has been a very effective technique that has been used for years. However recent developments in using skin graft connective tissue from tissue banks has paved the way for the use of an oral skin graft called Alloderm. This has provided an additional way to cover denuded root surfaces in the mouth and has provided an extremely effective alternative to the more conventional method of using grafted connective tissue from the patients pallette. Alloderm ( AlloDerm Regenerative Tissue Matrix)   is a freeze dried skin product, that is readily available and is extremely effective in reconstituting the gingival tissue. It is used for the following:

  • Covering exposed a denuded Roots

  • Gingival augmentation

  • Soft tissue ridge augmentation

  • Soft tissue augmentation around the dental implant area.

Alloderm is now widely used throughout the US due to the fact that it supports soft tissue regeneration. It also allows quick revascularization (  the restoration of the blood circulation of an organ or area)  and supports the migration of white blood cells and cell population allowing it to act as host tissue for a strong and natural repair.

The use of Alloderm has removed the need to remove the very complicated process of removing sub-epithelial connective tissue from the patients pallette, an often uncomfortable and painful process.

Stem cell technology has recently become available to the majority of Americans through the process of using the patient’s stem cells and reconstituting tissues within that patient’s body. We have the ability to take blood from the patient and using special technology separate out the patient’s  maximal platelets with 2 oz of their own blood.

When we  combine this with Alloderm, which is the freeze dried skin graft, the patients will then rec alloderm  which is not then and the Alloderm will be infused with their own platelets and stem cells, plateletes  are the cells that are necessary for healing and stem cells will accelerate the healing response because they will be applied alloderm and then placed surgically into the patient’s mouth.

We have used this procedure in the past with extremely successful results. There are a number of advantages to using freeze dried skin grafts like Alloderm and infusing it with the patient’s own platelets and stem cells.

These include : A faster healing process

                          More complete healing

Healing process has little or no post op discomfort for the patient.

Years ago, a physician who suspected heart disease would probably not refer the patient to a gum specialist. The same went for diabetes, pregnancy or just about any other medical condition. Times have changed.... The past 5 – 10 years have seen ballooning interest in possible links between healthy mouth and healthy body. Like many areas of the body, your mouth is filled with bacteria – most of them harm less. Normally the body’s natural defences and good oral health care such as daily brushing and flossing can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Conditions linked to oral health :-

 1. Endocarditis :- It is an infection of the inner lining of your heart. It typically occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of your body such as your mouth spread through your blood stream and attach to damaged areas in your heart.

 2. Cardiovascular disease :- Heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. Hardening of the arteries causes plaque to develop on the inner walls of arteries which thicken and causes an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. People with gum infections are at increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The more severe the infection, the greater the risk appears to be.

 3. Pregnancy and birth :- Periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. Babies born too early or at a low birth weight often have significant health problems like asthma, ear infections, heart conditions and learning disorders. Infection and inflammation interferes with fetus development in the womb.

 4. Diabetes :- It reduces the body’s resistance to infection – putting the gums at risk. Gum disease appears to be more frequent and severe among people who have diabetes. People who have gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels, and regular periodontal care can improve diabetes control.

 5. Lung infections :- People with periodontal disease have more bacteria present in their mouth which makes them more likely to inhale germs which can lead to lung infections like pneumonia. For those who have pre-existing lung problems like chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD ) gum disease may make it worse.

 6. Kidney disease :- Poor oral health seems to link to chronic kidney disease which affect blood pressure and bone health leading to kidney failure and heart disease. Toothless adults have more chance to have chronic kidney disease.

To protect your oral health Practice good oral hygiene every day. For example :-

 - Brush your teeth at least twice a day  with fluoride tooth paste

 - Floss daily

 - Eat a healthy diet and limit between meal snacks

 - Replace your tooth brush every 3 – 4 months / sooner if bristles are frayed

 - Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings

 - Avoid tobacco use

“Taking care of your oral health is an investment towards your overall health”
